PLATFORM FOR THE CALAS DIALOGUE IN GUADALAJARA ON FORCED DISAPPEARANCE CO-ORGANIZED BY CAPAZ

The German-Colombian Peace Institute – CAPAZ and CALAS (Maria Sibylla Merian Centre for Advanced Latin American Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences), in association with the universities of Guadalajara (Centro Universitario de Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades-CUCSH) and Justus Liebig University Giessen; the Heinrich Böll Foundation in Colombia, Mexico and the Caribbean, and the Bread for the World organisation, are pleased to invite those interested to the international event: “Political repression, forced disappearance and strategies of resilience in contexts of inequality”.

The event will take place on February 26 and 27, 2020 at the Belenes Campus (Salón de Usos Múltiples, CUCSH, Avenida José Parres Arias 150, CP 45132, Zapopan, Jal.) in Guadalajara, Mexico, and is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Forced disappearance in Latin America: An interdisciplinary and transnational perspective

This is how CALAS explains the context in which this meeting will take place: “with more than 200,000 cases, Latin America is the region of the world with the most missing persons. Despite its differences in terms of actors, duration in time, and political regimes, forced disappearance has been used –and continues to be used— in many countries of the region as a means of persecution and systematic elimination of political opposition and all those groups and social movements that are considered critical and/or perceived as a threat to social order.”

The platform for dialogue “Political repression, forced disappearance and strategies of resilience in contexts of inequality” will bring together experts from academia; representatives of social organisations in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and other Latin American and Central American countries; spokespersons for international cooperation, and artists to discuss these issues.
