Four new universities join the consortium: Universidad Católica de Pereira, Universidad Surcolombiana, Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, and Universidad de la Amazonia

Four Colombian universities have been accepted into the CAPAZ consortium through  Universidad Nacional de Colombia and  Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (in the case of the Universidad Católica de Pereira). Universidad Surcolombiana,  Universidad Pedagógica Nacional,  Universidad de la Amazonia, and  Universidad Católica de Pereira have been appointed as new CAPAZ associate members.

Each of the universities will have a spokesperson who will represent them on the CAPAZ Board of Directors, as listed below:

  • Universidad Católica de Pereira: Prof. Luis Adolfo Martínez Herrera

“Universidad Católica de Pereira is looking forward to joining CAPAZ in the hope of contributing to regional research processes and is certain that we can learn from other academic and social instances that integrate the Institute, thus strengthening the work in a paradigmatic area such as the coffee-growing region”.

  • Universidad Surcolombiana: Prof. Julio Roberto Jaime Salas

Julio Roberto Jaime has a BA in psychology, an MA from  Universidad Surcolombiana, and a PhD from  Universidad de Manizales. His area of research is peace and conflict management. He is part of the School of Social and Human Sciences of Universidad Surcolombiana in Neiva.

“ As an institution of higher education, we recognize our commitment and vital contribution to peacebuilding is to transform the practices and principles that so far have been configured as a generator of exclusion to support those that promote peaceful conflict resolution and the realisation of diversity as a factor that favours the elimination of social exclusion and the construction of a society that ensures personal and social well-being”.

  • Universidad Pedagógica Nacional: Prof. Claudia Milena Hernández Rodríguez

Claudia Milena Hernández is part of the Department of Social Sciences at UPN in Bogotá. She has a degree in Social Sciences and her areas of research are related to political and popular education.

“Being a member of CAPAZ provides an opportunity to broaden pedagogical and research horizons, cooperation and interinstitutionalcooperation and inter-institutional development. This will have an impact on the training processes of teachers, who have an educational projection in formal and non-formal education environments (in community settings, social organisations, with different populations)”.

  • Universidad de la Amazonia: Prof. Andrés Camilo Pinilla Salazar

Andrés Camilo Pinilla is a sociologist and specialist in agrarian law. His areas of research are related to rural issues, and their relationship with the armed conflict, human rights, and public policies.

“The main contribution Universidad de la Amazonia can make to the CAPAZ network is its knowledge of the region, its relationship with the communities and social organisations, and its trust with public and private entities in the Amazon, which allows it to produce new research from a territorial perspective, but also to strengthen the research that is already being carried out.  Universidad de la Amazonia can also contribute its 40 years of experience to the Colombian Amazon region, a strategic region for the country and the world, with important ecosystemic functions and unparalleled environmental diversity”.
