The Spanish-language services of the German network Deutsche Welle (DW) highlighted the continuing wave of killings of activists in countries such as Colombia and Brazil, even in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in the article entitled: “Sin tregua durante la pandemia: asesinatos de defensores en Latinoamérica no cesan en cuarentena” (No respite during the pandemic: Assassinations of human rights defenders in Latin America continue during the quarantine), published on April 9, 2020.

CAPAZ director and Professor of Peace Studies at Justus Liebig University, Giessen, Germany, Prof. Dr. Stefan Peters told DW, “Killers don’t rest, let alone stay home. On the contrary, it seems that the criminal structures, neo-paramilitary groups and FARC dissidents are taking advantage of the situation brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic to continue to kill social leaders, especially in the country’s most remote areas”.
