Workshop-seminar “Popular consultation and environmental democracy”

Workshop-seminar “Popular consultation and environmental democracy”

On March 15, 2019, Universidad de los Andes will host the workshop-seminar “Popular consultation and environmental democracy”. Entry is free but prior registration is required.

The event consists of a public seminar (8:00 a.m.-12.15 p.m.) and a workshop with representatives of social movements in the territories (1:45 p.m.-5:00 p.m.).

Public participation for environmental peace

What has happened to the social aspiration of enjoying direct and consolidated participation through popular consultation concerning extractive activities in the territories?

The event can be considered an invitation to an open dialogue between social organisations, academia, some of the countries legal aid clinics and social movements that have led popular consultation processes in the territories.

In light of the decisions of the Constitutional Court, the institutional obstacles of the State, along with private interests, the purpose of the meeting is to discuss and set out solutions regarding popular consultation as a mechanism of public participation and the current and future scenario of environmental democracy and territorial peace in Colombia.

The activity is part of the CAPAZ-supported exploratory study titled “Popular consultation and democracy vis-à-vis environmental peace”, coordinated by researcher María Cecilia Roa (Universidad de los Andes), in cooperation with Freie Universität Berlin (FU), Universidad de la Amazonía, UNIPAZ, Comité Ambiental en Defensa de la Vida, and Corporación SOS. The study is co-financed by Universidad de los Andes and FU.
