We are pleased to bring you the article entitled: Bordadoras de paz colombianas: elaborar las heridas y conservar la memoria” (Colombian peace embroiderers: working out the wounds and preserving the memory), recently published by the German channel Deutsche Welle, on the initiative called “Arropar el Palacio de Justicia” (Clothing the Palace of Justice), an installation by Virgelina Chará, human rights activist, artist and seamstress from the Colombian Pacific. The embroidered canvases that will cover the facade of the Palace of Justice in Bogotá in 2022 tell stories of personal and collective life around the conflict and peacebuilding in Colombia.

Virgelina Chará has been involved in different activities organized by the Colombian Truth Commission in partnership with CAPAZ, including workshops with Nodo Alemania in support of the Commission and the experience of cooking, memory and truth that brought together, among many other actors and stakeholders, the Colombian diaspora in Europe and other countries.

The DW article describes the sewing and embroidery work promoted by Nodo Alemania as an exercise in memory, overcoming the past and contributing to the truth of Colombians living in Germany. “The project ‘Arropar el Palacio de Justicia’ will receive pieces from 23 countries. The textile artist together with art therapist Alexandra Bisbicus are leading the embroidery workshops for the Colombian diaspora in Germany. Her goal is to create an atmosphere of trust, where participants can express their experiences with the armed conflict using thread and fabric. The workshops are there for people to tell their stories, their truth and their memory, says Ana Maria Linares, a member of Nodo Alemania”.
